Everyone of us at least once in a life have resort to encyclopedia information; this source is considered to be very extensive, comprehensive and reliable. With the emerge of free online encyclopedia the task and procedure of finding needed data have become more easy and fast. In fact, the idea of creation online encyclopedia to which everyone could add the materials appeared in 1993. So, with the spread of Internet the necessity of good search engines grew, that's why the main aim of that period was the digitization of old printed encyclopedias.As any innovation the process of free online encyclopedia creation experienced a lot of obstacles. The conversion of existing material and composing of new ones was assisted by alternation of successful and different periods. Thus, publishing of Gutenberg Encyclopedia started in 1995 and it was stopped after finishing the first volume. Only in 2002 the encyclopedia was finished but by other sources. Of cause the copyright question arouse that's why it has not been yet published even at 2005.

At last, the encyclopedia was digitized and published and at the beginning it was sold as a CD-ROM and later as an online service. It is considered that the most successful digitization was made by in 2000 and the updated process has been conducted frequently. There are some encyclopedias that are no online anymore for this or that reason; they are Interpedia, Nupedia and GNUpedia.
However, there are encyclopedias that are currently online, i.e. medical encyclopedia, “All info about.com" consists of about 100 separate sites on a wide variety of topics, “Baidu Baike" Chinese encyclopedia, “Encyclopedia Libre" is Spanish one based on Wickipedia software, “Everything2", “h2g2" is specific and to some extent humorous collection of encyclopedia articles, KolWiki is free online encyclopedia and so on.
